The Venice Biennale has for over a century been one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Established in 1895, the Biennale has an attendance today of over 370,000 visitors at the Art Exhibition.

The first International Art Exhibition was organized in 1895, followed by Music, Cinema, and Theatre in the 1930s. The 1932 Venice Film Festival was the first film festival ever organized, 1980 saw the first International Architecture Exhibition while Dance debuted in 1999.

The Palazzo del Cinema at Venice Lido inaugurated on 10th August 1937 on the occasion of the fifth edition of the festival is the main facility and screening theatre of the Venice Film Festival.

The International Festival of Contemporary Music was established in 1930 and was the first festival to run alongside the International Art Exhibition. The Dance section of the Venice Biennale was established in 1998. Before 1998, dance performances presented at the Venice Biennale were part of the Music program. Since 2000 the former Arsenale Cinema became a theatre space with a proscenium arch stage and seating for 328.
